Good Will Message from the Members of St. Kizito Small Christian Community (SCC), Waruku, Nairobi, Kenya

St. Kizito Small Christian Community (or SCC), Waruku is part of St. Austin’s Catholic Church, Muthangari within the Central Deanery of Nairobi Archdiocese in Kenya. On behalf of our SCC members we congratulate the Catholic Church in Africa at this official inauguration of the Association for Catholic Information in Africa (ACI Africa) Online News Service.

As you cover Catholic events on the continent of Africa we hope that you will gather and distribute information, case studies and commentaries about the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (or AMECEA) Small Christian Communities Key Pastoral Priority and the Small Christian Communities Pastoral Ecclesial Model of Church. We will be happy to assist you.

Small Christian Communities are the Catholic Church from the grassroot level. The main purpose is to help people according to their needs. In a SCC each member is important and committed to active pastoral work at the parish level. The SCC is a mixed community and open to both adults and young people as early as 12 years old — regardless of their social and educational background. The major role of SCCs is to link families. We are concerned about family life with the diverse cultures and traditions of different ethnic groups in Kenya. Respect of human rights and fostering unity among Christians are among our committments. We try to strengthen and transform community through sharing the Word of God, prayers and retreats.

For this reason SCCs are not optional, but is the basic building block and the main pillar of the Catholic Church in Africa. Pastorally this can work easily for all of us. The parish priest can become a member of the SCC in his specific neighborhood or geographical location. This is a two way communication from the bottom to the top and vice versa. SCC members are agents of reconciliation and the SCC itself is both the path and the place of reconciliation.
